Potential Harmful Chemicals in Fast Foods

Fast food is any food that is prepared and served quickly for immediate consumption. Some of the key elements of fast food are: 

  • It’s readily available on the go.
  • It’s typically less expensive than eating in a traditional sit-down restaurant.
  • It often includes food that is fried or prepared from frozen (not fresh) ingredients.

Toxic Ingredients

Fast food ingredients often include a lot of salt, sugar, and processed chemicals, which have been linked to health issues such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and even cancer. There are few others listed down, not-so-obvious ingredients in fast food that can cause additional health concerns.

  • Natural Beef Flavour: It contains hydrolyzed wheat and hydrolyzed milk as starting ingredients.
  • Potassium Bromate: This additive is tossed into recipes to enhance the texture and rising of flour.
  • Propylene Glycol: It is an anti-caking agent added to foods in order to “preserve texture, especially to keep moist foods from drying out.
  • TBHQ: It is added in order to prevent spoilage in oils and fats (usually animal fats).
  • Calcium Sulfate: It is an anti-caking agent and dough strengthener.

Phthalates and replacement plasticizers are chemicals used to make plastics soft and can migrate out of plastics into the food. Other plasticizers, chemicals that are emerging as replacements to phthalates have also been found.
